Thank you for taking the time to watch my video, and provide that information. It sounds like you also took a look at http://www.crowdmanage.com/crowdfunding/crowdfu... I stand by comments on that video that it doesn't really feel like a thriving community - there are thousands of VBulletin sites with more action around a shared interest. I think Sellaband is missing a trick here.

When I saw this interview http://flow-time.com/FAQRetrieve.aspx?ID=35413 its clear that the founder has an exciting vision. They seem to be going in the right direction, but I guess they have a long way to go before the model is proven. Proven being profitability. I think they raised $2m right? So if they have 42 albums funded then they have income of around $210K to date?

If Public Enemy had have worked that would have been the boost they need. Hopefully another bigger artist will come in and do the same, but with more funds. Someone with a dedicated fan base like Depeche Mode.

I need to correct you on a few things. Sellaband retains no ownership of the masters (i.e. songs) they earn by taking a 10% fee for use of the platform. That 10% comes out of the budget raised. Regarding Public Enemy, I can say 2 big reasons they didn't reach their target is the price per part of $25 and the target of $250,000

Now to interact with anyone you can leave a public message on their wall or send a private message. You obviously missed that. In a previous version of the site the forum link (where most of the community action takes place) was on top and very clear. Currently (to much of the communities disagreement) the forum link is hidden at the bottom of the screen.

The other thing I wanted to say is that IMO the model has been proven with 42 albums already funded through sellaband in fact recently Cubworld had just finished the funding for his 2nd album through SAB.

Thanks for your comment on my review. I agree with you that Linchpin is basically pep talk from Seth trying to get us started to become remarkable - but hey, there are worse people to give you a pep talk :)).

I also see Seth Godin's further deconstruction of the industrial paradigm and steering for change. At least, Godin himself is walking the talk of his blog. I somehow also miss 'the news' in this book, but I think that 'the news' in Linchpin is on a meta-level, like a sort of experiment by Godin to see how many people he can motivate to change their behavior and start with emotional labor.

To answer your question: I follow the points of your review. I definitely want to read the whole book too, to enjoy the meat on the bones. Unfortunately it was only available as a 60page preview in Europe...

http://koepee.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/review-l...

Thanks Christoph. I agree on your point about creating a best fit between participants and the crowdsourced product. For commercial projects you need to have incentives. Leadbeater does a good job of taking a look at what motivates participants.

I will look into making the default comment box larger, but you can type as much as you want, and I am not sure that Disqus has that as an option. I'm still waiting for the RSS button on your blog!

I haven't read the book yet, but it sounds very intriguing. As a marketing professional I'm of course primarily interested as to how crowdsourcing can be beneficial to and be integrated into a brand's marketing message. I like Leadbeater's five conditions as it encourages targeted communication and modules towards differing goals and motivations of each participating group. I think one main success factor for any crowdsourcing strategy is when participants are enabled to streamline and aggregate information as much as possible to give highly relevant input. Creating a best fit between participants and the crowdsourced product as well as streamlining communication around modules improves efficiency, gives recognition and creates loyalty towards success and the brand. I'll order the book, thanks for the recommendation!

OT: One suggestion for your website--please make the comment box bigger. It's too tiny for lengthy comments ;-) Happy New Year!

Hi Dan, I think you mean not an example of crowdsourcing, judging by the rest of your comments. Unfortunately crowdsourcing policy ideas will not counteract the influence of the lobbyists you refer to.

I would strongly argue, that our democracy today ,as we know it, is an example of crowdsourcing...The bigger the election campagin expenses (and many more things), the higher the chance to get elected. And where does the money for the campaigns come from? The industry lobbies who consist of national and international companies; I just can't see any democratizing factor that would matter or change something...
A crowdsourced government (if there was one) on the other hand would allocate the right power and capacities to the right people!...

Yep, you don't want to have all your eggs in one basket and then get Google slapped, or worse still lose you domain in a dodgy UDRP decision.

If you define an authority domain as one with 300 articles and a top three SERP I don't have one myself yet.
